A live build log

This site: the remake.

Rebuild, in public. Each iteration is a hypothesis. Conclusion arrives after the testing does.

Iterations

Iteration 01[Transition Design]shipped

Ditching the peel. Three slabs and a light switch.

The peel was pretty. It didn't really work — especially on touch. Replaced by a gesture from 2001.

Iteration 02[Surface · CSS]shipped

Faking paper in CSS. Stains and all.

Lunar grey ground, graph-paper grid, desk lamp, stains, worn patches — all built from CSS gradients and SVG filters. The best we could get from code alone.

Iteration 03[Surface · Real Paper]shipped

Four tiles from the same sheet.

CSS couldn't quite do fibre. A 60×60 photographic tile could — if we killed the repetition. Four crops of one sheet, shuffled in a 4×4 macro.

Iteration 04[Typography · Layout]shipped

Voices on paper.

Poet, Hand, Engineer. The grid as resolution, not ruling. Type hovers above the lines, like a person writing on graph paper.

Iteration 05[Synthesis]drafted

How it all came together.

Pending. Conclusion arrives after more of the Lab has been rebuilt on the new surface.
